Mountlake Terrace's first cottage housing development is approaching completion but the results is not exactly what some people had expected. Cottage Housing is generally defined as a grouping of small, single family dwelling units clustered around a common area and developed with a coherent plan for the entire site. 

The planning commission had a brief discussion about the project at the end of Monday's meeting. Some commissioners were surprised to learn that all the cottage homes are remaining under single ownership by Cedar Cottages LLC and being rented out rather than being sold to individual buyers.

Rents range from $1,600/month for a 1,000 sf home ($1.60/sf) to $2,275 for a 1,700 sf home ($1.34/month). All homes are have 3 bedrooms. While those rents may seem high to those of us with a mortgage, they are actually quite reasonable compared to the various apartments complexes in Mountlake Terrace and factoring in the extra breathing room a detached home provides.
