Where in MLT are People Running/Cycling?

Strava is a company that has software that lets you track your rides and runs via your iPhone, Android or dedicated GPS device and helps you analyze and quantify your performance. One really interesting thing they are doing with the data they collect is compiling it and displaying a global heat map that shows the most popular routes for running and cycling on a Google Map.

The map of the Mountlake Terrace area tends to confirm some of the things we discussed last week concerning walkability in Mountlake Terrace.

Here are a couple of observations:

  • The Interurban Trail on the west boundary of the city is obviously the most travelled.
  • 236th St SW from the Transit Center east to 56th Ave W and then 56th Ave W south to 244th St SW has a lot of activity. It appears as if a lot of people cut through 58th/238th to avoid the light at 56th/236th.
  • While there is some activity between the Transit Center and Lake Ballinger, it quickly dies off once you hit Lake Ballinger Park. I expect that this link between the Transit Center and the Interurban via Lake Ballinger is going to get a lot more activity once the Lakeview Trail is constructed.
  • With the exception of the interurban trail and Lakeview Drive around Lake Ballinger, there is very little running/cycling activity west of I-5 and practically none along the 220th corridor.
  • Generally speaking, the routes with high activity line up with the City's Bicycle Master Plan (which can be in Chapter 4 of the Transportation Master Plan)
  • Cedar Way south of 236th seems to be a very popular route. I'm guessing many people are coming to/from the Burke Gilman Trail via Lake Forest Park.
  • East/West routes in the City are lacking. 236th is used quite a bit but the other routers crossing I-5 have limited use. 212th does have bike lanes but it doesn't appear that to get a lot of running/cycling traffic. As the Town Center gets more developed and more destinations are added, I can imagine the 230th crossing of I-5 could get more use but it is not very pedestrian friendly at this point. The steep hill on the west side certainly does not help.
