Five Years of nextMLT
December 2018 marks five years since I started nextMLT.com. In the first post on December 16, 2013 I quoted Winston Churchill:
We shape our buildings, and afterwards our buildings shape us.
I followed by writing “nextMLT is about how we can and how we are getting from here to there. The city is changing whether we like it or not, so let's be involved, be informed, and make it what we want it to be. “
While most of what is posted on nextMLT is informational in nature I’d like to think that it has resulted in the Mountlake Terrace community being more engaged in how our city is shaped and how changes might impact us, both positive and negative.
This year I was excited to have Rory Paine-Donovan and Adam Bettcher join in nextMLT efforts as contributors both in writing for the website but also in cultivating relationships (typically over beers at Diamond Knot) with various community members, city staff and elected officials, land owners and developers.
While construction projects in the Town Center have been slow to get moving, 2019 will bring many of the changes that we’ve been writing about on nextMLT for some time now.
Projects currently under construction
Terrace Station - Gateway Boulevard extension and construction of a 6-story building containing 258 residential homes and ground floor commercial space
Atlas 236 - 5-story mixed-use building with 151 residential homes at the NE corner of 56th Ave W and 236th St SW
55th Ave W Townhomes - 12 townhomes on 55th Ave W between 236th and 234th
Projects Likely Beginning Construction in 2019
Main Street Phase 1 - City project to rebuild 236th St SW from I-5 to 56th Ave W. New wider sidewalks, bike lanes, utilities, lighting and improved pedestrian crossings
Sound Transit Parking Lot at Rogers - Temporary commuter parking at the former Rogers property during light rail station construction
Sound Transit Light Rail Station - Lynnwood Link Light Rail Station beginning construction in 2019 and opening in 2024
Civic Campus Redevelopment - Construction of a new City Hall and expanded Police Station beginning mid-2019
Promenade Living at Town Square - 3-story mixed-use building north of the mosque on 56th with 47 residential homes and ground-floor commercial space. This project has been around for a very long time but some site work indicates construction may begin very soon.
